De-weaponisation of Karachi must to end target killing

Karachi target killings could not be brought to end unless the government has strong political will to deweaponize the city and deal with the criminals having political patronage with an iron hand, say political leaders.
The recent spree of target killings in metropolis has gripped the whole city with panic and fear. Dozens of people have died in the recent spree of target killings and the shaky coalition government seemed totally crippled to tackle the issue.
Target killings have not only affected the social life in the city but also its economy. Karachiites are forced to live under perpetual fear, as firing and target killing incidents have become virtually the order of the day.
Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) Rabita Committee member and provincial minister for information technology Raza Haroon, talking to PPI, held Awami National Party (ANP) and Senior Vice President of PPP Sindh chapter and Sindh Home Minister Dr. Zulfiqar Ali Mirza responsible for the target killings in Karachi.
Raza Haroon accused ANP of patronizing land mafia and terrorists.
He alleged that the leadership of ANP Sindh is involved in the target killings.
He charged Dr. Zulfiqar Mirza is supporting ‘Peoples’ Aman Committee’, which takes extortion from traders and well-to-do people in Kharadar, Layari and other areas.
He said Peoples’ Aman Committee is connected to the drug mafia and supplying weapons to terrorists. He said a few days back the ANP Sindh leadership had announced that they would boycott the by-election or take arms.
Raza Haroon said that the criminals, who are being patronized by the political parties, should be arrested and given exemplary punishment to restore peace in the city.
He stressed that media should reveal the names of these culprits and plays its role as fourth pillar of the nation.
The Advisor to Sindh Chief Minister on Information, Sharmila Faruqui, talking to PPI said police and Rangers were patrolling in the city to combat the target killing. She said PPP would solve all the matters through dialogue with its coalition partners.
There were some political motives behind target killing in the city, while problem has become more complicated on arrest of some political workers, she added.
ANP Sindh chapter leader and Sindh Labour Minister, Amir Nawab, when contacted, said that Karachi is the economic hub of the country and an operation for deweaponizing it should be carried out with any discrimination.
He said it is the responsibility of all political parties, media and other stakeholders to maintain peace in Karachi. He said culprits involved in target killing may be arrested and expose them to the public and their masterminds and patrons should also be arrested and unveiled before public.
Muhammad Hussain Mahnti, Amir of Jamaat-i-Islami Karachi chapter said that ‘a terrorist party of Karachi’ is involved in the target killing and it has been supported by the agencies.
He said ‘mountains’ of illegal weapons are present in Karachi and its peace could not be restored unless its complete deweaponization.
Central Information Secretary of Sunni Tahrik, Fahim, talking to PPI said that core committee is based on only the PPP and MQM.
He suggested that the other parties should also be made part of this committee so that the burning problems of Karachi may be discussed together and a lasting solution found for restoring peace in the city.
Pakistan Muslim League-Functional (PML-F) Sindh chapter leader and advisor to the Sindh Chief Minister, Imtiaz Shaikh said his party strongly condemns the target killing and violence in Karachi.
He demanded that culprits may be arrested as soon as possible to bring peace in the city.
Imran Ismail, President Tehreek-e-Insaf Sindh chapter held Sindh Home Minister Dr. Zulfiqar Ali Mirza responsible for target killing in Karachi. He charged Mirza is doing nothing to end the target killing.
He alleged that the people involved in target killing are sitting in the government. He said an effective enquiry should be made in this regard and the real culprits may be brought before the court.
